Winter Fitness Tips

Cold days are upon us, and it is harder to keep motivated when the sun is setting before 5 PM every day. While winter is a good time to reduce the number of workouts you may be doing so your body can rest and recharge, it’s still important to get some physical activity in. The following tips will help you keep active throughout the coldest months of the year.

Just Do It

Cold temperatures make it harder to want to get a workout in, but setting your alarm and getting your workout out of the way in the morning might be just the trick you need to stay active. Starting your morning with a workout has been proven to boost your mood and set you up for a productive day. Working out in the morning will also mean that your workout is complete and not something you have to worry about when you get home from work in the evening.


Winter is a great time to add stretching to your regular workouts. Stretching not only helps keep you limber, but it can help with your overall well-being. Stretching also helps improve your mood and can help release built-up tension from the colder weather. Stretching can be done on your own at home or by attending yoga classes at your local yoga studio or fitness centre.


Sometimes we just need a little extra motivation when it comes to working out, and a gym buddy can be the exact thing we need to make it through the winter blahs. Working out with someone creates accountability and creates a regular fitness routine during months when it’s harder to find the motivation to go to the gym. When picking your workout partner, make sure you are picking someone that is motivated, works hard while at the gym, and won’t skip workouts!

Workout Anywhere

Whether it’s while you’re sitting on the couch watching your favorite tv show, or while you’re brushing your teeth at night before bed, there is always time for a mini workout! Days when you can’t make it to the gym, you should still try to do some type of physical movement or activity. This is the perfect time to add exercises like planks, push-ups, sit-ups, wall-sits, and calf stretches to your routine.

Remember, your winter workouts don’t have to push your body to the limits every single time, but staying physically active and moving can help you chase away the winter blues during the colder months this year!
